RSI (CANS)

CANS is an acronym used for complaints of the arms, neck and/or shoulder but also includes the elbows, wrists, hands or fingers (in other words the upper extremity). This is the newly coined term for complaints that were previously referred to as RSI (repetitive strain injury). The cause of this complaint is a sustained period of overload. CANS-complaints are significant enough as to hinder daily functioning to different degrees.

Complaints:

  • Pain
  • Stiffness
  • Pins & Needles
  • Loss of coordination
  • Loss of strength
  • Discolouration of the skin

The treating therapist will look at the complaint from a broad perspective and assess not only the local pain but also include the entire arm-, neck- and shoulder. Generally, following an assessment, a broad treatment plan is required. Additionally to hands on treatment by the therapist, in some cases, training sessions are required in order to increase the loadability (strength, coordination and endurance). Posture/ergonomics in your workplace plays an integral role in this and is not overlooked by us. The therapist will evaluate your workplace and other ergonomic factors which may be of influence to your complaints in order to provide you with the most efficient treatment. The ‘Arbowet’ and regulations have ensured that, in most cases, the workplace has been optimized. If we find there is a need to a multidisciplinary approach, the treating therapist will get in touch with the appropriate healthcare professional.
